Lieutenant commander, U.S. Navy

William Merrill Corry Jr. was an officer in the United States Navy who served during World War I. Born in Quincy, Florida, he attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1910. He subsequently became a pioneer in naval aviation, earning his wings and serving in various aviation roles during the first World War.
During his service, he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. Corry was recognized for his immense bravery during an incident in October 1920, where he attempted to rescue a fellow officer from a burning aircraft, ultimately sustaining fatal injuries from the crash and subsequent fire.
For his extraordinary heroism, Corry was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. He was also a recipient of the Navy Cross. Several US Navy ships have been named in his honor to commemorate his legacy of ultimate sacrifice and devotion to duty.
