William Martin was a Union Navy sailor who served during the American Civil War. Serving as a boatswain's mate, his service is historically recognized for his bravery during the operations on the inland waterways of the United States. He was stationed aboard the ironclad gunboat USS Benton, which played a critical role in the Union's river campaigns.
On December 27, 1862, Martin participated in the assault on Haines Bluff along the Yazoo River. During this intense engagement under heavy enemy fire, he distinguished himself through his courage and dedication to duty. His actions during this battle earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
