William Martin was a Union Navy sailor who served during the American Civil War. He distinguished himself through his heroic actions while serving aboard the USS Varuna during the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip in April 1862. The engagement was a crucial naval battle aimed at capturing the city of New Orleans.
During the fierce combat, the USS Varuna was heavily damaged, but Martin and his crewmates fought with exceptional determination. In recognition of his bravery and devotion to duty under fire, Martin was awarded the nation's highest military decoration for valor.
