Major-General William McBean was a Scottish officer in the British Army who rose from the ranks to become a general officer. He is best remembered for his conspicuous bravery during the Indian Mutiny, which earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Throughout his distinguished military career, McBean served with the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders. His devotion to duty and leadership in battle earned him rapid promotion and the deep respect of both his superiors and the men under his command.
