First Sergeant, U.S. Army
First Sergeant William McNamara was an Irish-born soldier in the United States Army who served during the late 19th century. As a member of the 4th U.S. Cavalry, he participated in the grueling campaigns of the Texas–Indian Wars, securing a reputation for steadfastness and bravery in the face of hostile forces.
On September 29, 1872, during a fierce engagement against the Comanche Indians at the Red River in Texas, McNamara distinguished himself through acts of conspicuous gallantry. His conduct during this battle of the Indian Wars earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
