Carpenter's Mate Third Class, U.S. Navy
William Meyer was a United States Navy sailor who served during the late 19th century. He is best known for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War, where he served as a Carpenter's Mate Third Class.
During the Battle of Cienfuegos on May 11, 1898, Meyer participated in a hazardous operation to cut the underwater telegraph cables linking Cienfuegos, Cuba, with the outside world. This operation was critical to isolating Spanish forces on the island.
In the face of heavy enemy fire, Meyer demonstrated extraordinary bravery and devotion to duty. For his conspicuous gallantry during this action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration for valor.
