Colour Sergeant, British Army
William McWheeney VC DCM, also known as Mawhinney, was born in Bangor, County Down, Ireland. He was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
McWheeney served as a Colour Sergeant in the British Army. He was awarded his Victoria Cross for his conspicuous bravery and service during the Siege of Sevastopol, which took place between 1854 and 1855 during the Crimean War.
In addition to the Victoria Cross, his distinguished service during his military career was recognized with the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
