Coxswain, U.S. Navy
Coxswain William P. Brownell was a United States Navy sailor who served during the American Civil War. He distinguished himself through exceptional heroism while serving aboard the USS Benton, a city-class ironclad gunboat that played a vital role in the Union's Western Gunboat Flotilla.
During his service, Brownell participated in major riverine campaigns aimed at securing the Mississippi River. He was specifically recognized for his gallantry during the Battle of Grand Gulf on May 2, 1863, and subsequent actions during the Siege of Vicksburg on May 22, 1863. His conspicuous bravery under fire during these pivotal engagements earned him the nation's highest military decoration.
For his actions during these intense naval bombardments, Coxswain Brownell was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 16, 1864. His legacy remains an integral part of the history of the Union Navy's river operations during the Civil War.
