Captain, U.S. Army
William Perkins Black was an American lawyer and Union Army officer who served during the American Civil War. Serving with the 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Black demonstrated exceptional leadership and bravery during the early stages of the war. His dedicated service in the Western Theater made him a prominent figure among his peers.
He received the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his conspicuous gallantry at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, on March 7, 1862. During the intense engagement, Captain Black, then a lieutenant, distinguished himself by leading a successful charge and maintaining his position under heavy enemy fire despite being severely wounded.
Following his military service, Black pursued a distinguished career in law in Illinois, where he became a prominent attorney in Chicago. He is remembered for both his heroism on the battlefield and his dedication to the legal profession in the post-war era.
