Private William R. Fox was an American soldier who fought during the American Civil War. He served in the U.S. Army and distinguished himself during the final campaigns of the war in Virginia.
On 2 April 1865, during the Third Battle of Petersburg, Private Fox performed deeds of personal bravery that later earned him the nation's highest military decoration. His actions during this critical Union breakthrough contributed to the eventual capitulation of Confederate forces.
For his gallantry in action at Petersburg, Fox was officially honored with the Medal of Honor on 28 March 1879, cementing his place in American military history.
