Lieutenant Colonel Brevet Colonel, U.S. Army
William Russell Parnell was an Irish-born adventurer and soldier during the mid-to late 19th century. He initially began his military career in the British Army as a member of the 17th Lancers during the Crimean War. During this conflict, he participated in the famous Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava.
Following his service in the British Army, Parnell emigrated to the United States and joined the United States Army. He served as a cavalry officer during the Indian Wars on the American frontier, where he demonstrated outstanding bravery and leadership under fire.
He eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet Colonel in the United States Army. For his distinguished gallantry during the Indian Wars, particularly at the Battle of White Bird Canyon, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration.
