Boatswain's Mate, U.S. Navy
Boatswain's Mate William S. Bond was an American Sailor who served during the American Civil War. He was assigned to the USS Kearsarge, a Union sloop-of-war tasked with tracking down Confederate raiders.
On June 19, 1864, during the Battle of Cherbourg off the coast of France, the USS Kearsarge engaged and sank the notorious Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama. Bond distinguished himself through his conduct and courage during this fierce naval engagement.
For his exceptional bravery and performance under fire during the historic battle, Bond was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 31, 1864, representing the highest decoration for valor in the United States military.
