Biography

William "Rusty" Ruthven, VC was an Australian soldier and state Labor politician. He served with distinction in the Australian Army during the First World War, rising to the rank of Major. His courage and leadership on the battlefield earned him the deep respect of his comrades and country.

Ruthven is most notable for being an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His actions during the war cemented his legacy as a national hero.

Following his distinguished military service, Ruthven transitioned to public life, serving as a state Labor politician. He continued to advocate for veterans and his community throughout his post-war career.
