William Tilton's Medal of Honor record is unusually spare. The official citation gives no elaborate incident, only the judgment that his conduct in the field during the Richmond operations of 1864 was gallant.
Born on 27 October 1834 in St. Albans, Vermont, Tilton served as a sergeant in Company C, 7th New Hampshire Infantry. His Medal of Honor action is recorded during the Richmond Campaign in 1864.
