At Vicksburg, William Toomer volunteered for one of the Civil War's most dangerous assignments: the assault group remembered as the volunteer storming party.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, on 12 January 1830, Toomer served in Company G, 127th Illinois Infantry. On 22 May 1863 he took part in the Union assault at Vicksburg, where volunteers moved against the Confederate works under intense fire.
Medal of Honor Citation (condensed): Gallantry in the charge of the volunteer storming party at Vicksburg on 22 May 1863.
The Medal of Honor was presented to Toomer on 9 July 1894. He died in Chicago on 27 December 1901 and was buried in Graceland Cemetery.
