Treating a wounded sailor under fire at Veracruz
William Zuiderveld earned the Medal of Honor for his conduct during the seizure of Veracruz, Mexico, on April 21, 1914. A hospital apprentice first class attached to USS Florida, he advanced alone through a narrow alley under heavy fire to reach a wounded sailor. Kneeling in an exposed position, he bandaged the man’s head to stop the bleeding.
Zuiderveld received the medal aboard USS Florida at Brooklyn Navy Yard on January 6, 1915. He later attained the rank of lieutenant. Born in Michigan on January 24, 1888, he died in San Diego on February 5, 1978, and was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
