Catalog description
The Imperial Order of St Anna was an order of the Russian Empire awarded for distinguished military and civil service. The order became a Russian state decoration in 1797 and was reorganized into four classes in 1815. The Fourth Class was traditionally associated with an edged weapon rather than a conventional breast badge. For combat distinctions, Russian regulations used the inscription "For Bravery" on the weapon and an Order of St Anna ribbon sword-knot. This catalog entry preserves Joseph Whiteside Boyle's confirmed archival entitlement as Order of St Anne, Fourth Class with Swords.
