★Why this archive exists
Behind every medal is a person — a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, a friend. The medals they earned tell stories of service and sacrifice that risk being forgotten when the generations who knew them pass on.
VictoriaCross.ca exists to record those stories carefully and respectfully. We build a single profile per hero containing their medals, citations, service history, photographs, and family notes. Each profile is meant to outlast the people who remember the recipient personally.

What
★What records we include
We focus on individuals decorated for valour, gallantry, or distinguished service. Every published profile aims to include:
- Medals and clasps (with the correct order of precedence per the issuing country)
- Citation text and London Gazette / governmental source references where available
- Service summary — rank, branch, unit, conflicts, dates
- Biography and family-supplied notes
- Photographs and source documents
- Verification status and provenance for every claim
Accuracy
★How accuracy is handled
Every profile passes through a deliberate research–edit–verify pipeline before it is published. Citations are cross-checked against primary sources (gazettes, official medal rolls, regimental histories) and a second reviewer signs off independently. Records remain open to correction after publication — see How the Archive Works for the full pipeline.
We'd rather flag a record as incomplete than guess. When a fact is uncertain, the profile says so.
Families
★How families can help
If a hero in the archive is a relative or someone you knew, you can contribute photos, documents, anecdotes, and corrections. Submissions are reviewed before anything is changed, and nothing private is published without permission.
Methodology
★What USM-25 is — and what it is not
The Unified Scoring Matrix 25 (USM-25) is a transparent ranking framework that lets us compare decorated heroes across services and eras on common ground. It weights gallantry awards by tier, rarity, and career variety; campaign medals and long-service awards are intentionally excluded.
USM-25 is nota measure of a person's worth. It is a comparison tool for leaderboard and discovery purposes, designed to be openly documented and reproducible. The emotional centre of this archive is remembrance — the score is a navigation aid.
