Company Sergeant Major Albert Gill became one of Britain's most revered First World War heroes when he gave his life while protecting his fellow soldiers during a desperate assault on the Western Front. His extraordinary courage earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the British Empire, and secured his place among the bravest men of the Great War.

Born on 28 September 1879 in Birmingham, England, Gill spent much of his early life working as a coal miner, a demanding profession that forged the strength, resilience, and determination that would later define his military service. When the First World War erupted, he enlisted in the 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, where his experience, leadership, and unwavering sense of duty quickly earned him promotion to Company Sergeant Major.

Gill's defining act of heroism came on 27 July 1916 during the Battle of Delville Wood on the Somme. As his battalion advanced under intense German machine gun and rifle fire, several wounded soldiers were left stranded in exposed ground. Without hesitation, Gill repeatedly crossed open terrain swept by enemy fire to rescue his injured comrades. Fully aware of the danger, he refused to abandon those in need, making multiple attempts to bring them to safety. During one of these courageous rescues, he was fatally wounded. His extraordinary selflessness and complete disregard for his own safety earned him a posthumous Victoria Cross.

Albert Gill's distinguished military service was recognized with the Victoria Cross, the 1914 Star, the British War Medal 1914–1920, and the Victory Medal. Although his military career was cut tragically short, these honors reflect both his early service with the British Expeditionary Force and the supreme act of gallantry that defined his legacy.

Gill's Victoria Cross citation praised his repeated efforts to save wounded comrades despite overwhelming enemy fire, emphasizing a level of courage and devotion to duty that inspired everyone who witnessed his actions.
