Private, U.S. Army
Private Albert D. Sale was an American soldier in the United States Army who served during the Apache Wars in the late 19th century. As a member of the 8th U.S. Cavalry, he participated in campaigns in the Arizona Territory, where troops frequently engaged hostile Apache bands in rugged terrain.
He distinguished himself during an engagement at the Santa Maria River on June 29, 1869. During the battle, Sale engaged in hand-to-hand combat with an Apache warrior, whom he killed, and subsequently captured the warrior's war pony. His actions demonstrated exceptional bravery under fire.
For his gallantry in action, Sale was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration. His courage during the Apache Wars remains a notable example of the frontier cavalry's combat actions.
