Landsman, U.S. Navy
Daniel Noble (1838–1903) was a Civil War sailor who served in the Union Navy. Prior to his naval service, he had been held as a Confederate prisoner at Camp Douglas, Illinois. After his release or exchange, he entered the service of the United States Navy as a Landsman, a rank given to new recruits with little or no experience at sea.
Noble was assigned to the USS Metacomet during the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. This major naval engagement, led by Rear Admiral David Farragut, aimed to close the last major Confederate port on the Gulf of Mexico east of the Mississippi River. During the intense combat, Noble exhibited extraordinary heroism.
For his gallantry under fire during the Battle of Mobile Bay, Noble was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military's highest decoration for valor. He survived the war and lived until 1903, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service in a pivotal Civil War naval battle.
