Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps
Daniel Paul Matthews was a United States Marine Corps sergeant who served during the Korean War. He was killed in action in 1953 during the Battle for Outpost Vegas while saving a wounded comrade. Matthews was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his single-handed attack under fire upon an enemy machine gun position that was blocking the evacuation of his fellow Marine.
His courageous actions and selfless sacrifice on the battlefield became a hallmark of Marine Corps valor during the conflict. His legacy is preserved through the posthumous presentation of the nation's highest military decoration to his family, and he remains a symbol of dedication and bravery under fire.
