Daniel Peter Reigle was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. Serving in the infantry, he demonstrated exceptional gallantry during one of the conflict's most critical engagements in the Shenandoah Valley.
On October 19, 1864, Sergeant Reigle participated in the Battle of Cedar Creek fought near Middletown, Virginia. This confrontation was the decisive engagement of Major General Philip Sheridan's Valley Campaigns of 1864 and stood as the largest battle fought in the Shenandoah Valley.
For his distinguished bravery during the battle, Reigle was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. His actions contributed to the Union victory which permanently neutralized the Confederate threat in the Shenandoah Valley.
