Group captain, Royal Air Force
Group Captain Gilbert Stuart Martin Insall was a distinguished British aviator who served during the First World War. He is best remembered as a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth subjects. His service was characterized by remarkable bravery in the air and a resilient spirit on the ground.
During his service with the Royal Flying Corps, Insall demonstrated exceptional courage during aerial combat, which earned him the Victoria Cross. He achieved the unique distinction of being the only person to have both won the Victoria Cross and successfully escaped from a German prisoner of war camp during the First World War.
Following his escape and the end of the war, he continued his service in the newly formed Royal Air Force, eventually reaching the rank of Group Captain. In addition to the Victoria Cross, his distinguished service was recognized with the Military Cross and he was Mentioned in Despatches.
