Sergeant, Australian Army
Henry Dalziel was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was awarded the decoration for his actions while serving with the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War. Notably, Dalziel's Victoria Cross was the 1,000th ever awarded.
Following his wartime service, Dalziel returned to Australia and attempted to make a living by farming. However, troubled by the severe injuries he sustained during the war, he eventually left the land to take up factory work. He moved between various jobs during the 1930s, leading a somewhat transient lifestyle that even included a period of gold prospecting.
In the mid-1930s, Dalziel rejoined the military in a part-time capacity. During the Second World War, he continued his service in a training role within Australia. He passed away in 1965 at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of immense courage under fire.
