Jeremiah Mahoney served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the American Civil War. He is remembered for his remarkable bravery during a critical engagement in the Knoxville Campaign.
On November 29, 1863, during the Battle of Fort Sanders in Tennessee, Sergeant Mahoney, along with two other men, successfully captured the flag of the Confederate 17th Mississippi Infantry. This action was highly commended for its bravery and contribution to the defense of the fort.
For his gallantry in action, Mahoney was awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration. His legacy remains preserved as a symbol of Union determination during the Civil War.
