Jeremiah Troy

He jumped overboard and saved a young sailor from the water.

Jeremiah Troy was born in New York City in 1845. He served in the U.S. Navy as a chief boatswain's mate aboard the training ship New Hampshire.

On April 21, 1882, while the ship was at Newport, Rhode Island, Troy jumped overboard to rescue Francis T. Price, a third-class boy serving aboard the ship. His Medal of Honor citation recognizes his successful intervention to save Price from drowning. The official record does not provide further details about the accident or rescue.

The award was accredited to New York and was not posthumous. Troy died in Brooklyn on January 11, 1897, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery there. His Medal of Honor commemorates lifesaving courage in naval service, demonstrating that extraordinary devotion to a shipmate could be recognized in an emergency outside combat.
