First Sergeant, U.S. Army
Leonidas Mahlon Godley was a Union Army soldier who served during the American Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 6, 1862, joining Company E of the 22nd Iowa Infantry Regiment as a 2nd Sergeant.
Demonstrating leadership and dedication, Godley was promoted to 1st Sergeant in January 1863. He served with his regiment during the major campaigns of the Western Theater of the war.
First Sergeant Godley was awarded the Medal of Honor for his conspicuous gallantry during the Siege of Vicksburg on May 22, 1863. His actions during this critical Union offensive cemented his legacy as a military hero of the Civil War.
