Nicholas Irwin was a Union Navy sailor who served during the American Civil War. Serving as a Seaman, he distinguished himself through acts of bravery during major naval operations.

He is best known for his heroism during the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, while serving aboard the USS Brooklyn. His conduct in the face of intense enemy fire earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.

Irwin's actions during the Civil War represent the dedication and valor of the Union Navy's enlisted sailors during one of the most significant naval engagements of the conflict.
