Corporal, U.S. Army
Orlando Phidelio Boss (1844-1931) was a corporal in Company F, 25th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He demonstrated exceptional bravery on June 3, 1864, during the Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, which ultimately earned him the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
During the intense engagement, Corporal Boss first dragged a wounded comrade to safety under heavy enemy fire. Upon completing this rescue, he sought permission from his brigade commander, General George J. Stannard, to return to the active battlefield to rescue Lieutenant Daly, an officer of his regiment who lay wounded and exposed. After obtaining consent, Boss braved a torrent of enemy gunfire to successfully bring the lieutenant to safety, showcasing extraordinary courage and devotion to his fellow soldiers.
