Private, U.S. Marine Corps
Robert Miller McTureous Jr. was a United States Marine who posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration, for his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.
On June 7, 1945, while serving with the 3rd Battalion, 29th Marines, 6th Marine Division, Private McTureous single-handedly launched a daring assault against Japanese cave positions that were pinning down his company's stretcher bearers. He made multiple runs under intense fire to attack the enemy fortifications with hand grenades, diverting fire and allowing the wounded to be safely evacuated.
Although mortally wounded during this action, his courageous sacrifice and devotion to duty saved many of his fellow Marines. He died of his wounds days later and was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor for his conspicuous gallantry.
