Sergeant, British Army
Walter Potter Ritchie VC was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He earned this decoration for his exceptional actions and leadership during the Battle of the Somme in the First World War while serving as a bugler in the British Army.
During his military career, Ritchie served in both the First and Second World Wars. For his Great War service, he was awarded several key campaign medals alongside the Victoria Cross, including the 1914 Star with Mons Clasp. He also received foreign recognition with the French Croix de Guerre. He continued his service during the Second World War, earning additional campaign decorations.
His legacy remains highly honored, particularly in Scotland where a centenary paving stone was unveiled in his memory outside the People's Palace in Glasgow. The bugle he used to rally his comrades during the Battle of the Somme is preserved at the Queen's Own Highlanders Museum in Inverness.
