First Sergeant, U.S. Army
William D. Edwards was an American soldier in the United States Army who served as a First Sergeant with the 7th U.S. Infantry. He fought during the Indian Wars in the late 19th century. He is best known for his actions during the Nez Perce War, a conflict between the U.S. military and the Nez Perce tribe.
On August 9, 1877, Edwards participated in the Battle of Big Hole in Montana. During this intense engagement against Chief Joseph and his warriors, Edwards distinguished himself through acts of conspicuous bravery. He was one of only six men to be awarded the nation's highest military decoration for their actions during this historic battle.
Following his distinguished service, Edwards was recognized with the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Big Hole. His legacy remains preserved as an exemplar of the frontier Army soldier during the Indian Wars campaigns.
