Pharmacist's Mate Second Class, U.S. Navy
William David Halyburton Jr. was a United States Navy hospital corpsman who served with distinction during World War II. Assigned to a Marine Corps rifle company, he demonstrated extraordinary heroism during the intense fighting of the Pacific campaign. His service culminated in his ultimate sacrifice during the Battle of Okinawa.
On May 10, 1945, during a fierce engagement on Okinawa, Halyburton constantly exposed himself to relentless enemy fire to administer aid to wounded Marines. While shielding a wounded comrade with his own body, he was mortally wounded. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
In addition to the Medal of Honor, Halyburton's sacrifices and dedicated service were recognized with the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, and several campaign and service medals. His legacy of selflessness and devotion to duty remains a hallmark of the United States Navy Hospital Corps.
