First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps
William Deane Hawkins was a United States Marine Corps officer who served during World War II. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States' highest military decoration, for his extraordinary heroism and ultimate sacrifice during the amphibious assault on Tarawa. As a first lieutenant, Hawkins led his scout-sniper platoon with immense courage under devastating enemy fire.
Throughout the Battle of Tarawa, Hawkins continually put himself in danger to clear enemy positions and direct his men. Despite being wounded multiple times, he refused to evacuate and continued to lead assaults on Japanese pillboxes and fortifications. His actions were key to the success of the Marine landing force.
Lieutenant Hawkins succumbed to the wounds he received in battle. His legacy is preserved through his posthumous decorations and the naming of Hawkins Field on Betio in his honor, representing the pinnacle of Marine Corps devotion and valor.
